Description:

It should be made clear that this is written in the English of its day (1604) and will appear archaic, but even so it shouldn't be too hard for anyone to read. To us in today's world this is more of a curiosity than anything else. James I had this printed in 1604 and this is based on the 1884 edition. The footnotes have been conveniently placed at the end of the text.

As you read this one thing instantly becomes apparent, James I was very anti-smoking for divers reasons. This short treatise goes into these reasons which include smoking as being irreligious as well as medically unsound. At the time this was written tobacco was considered as a general panacea, and amongst its many benefits it was considered to stop insomnia, as well as be a pick-up if you had lethargy, by increasing the brain's activity. Medicine was still based on the four humours system at the time, but as James I points out, nothing can cure loads of different complaints.

I love this when the King rants on about smells and dirty and unclean savages. The age he lived in we know was extremely smelly, but James I stood out as a man who stank more than others, so goodness knows what pong emanated from him; perhaps that is why courtiers smoked, to try to cover the smell. There is a lot to make you laugh here, but one thing that sticks out and is of interest, even back then corpses of smokers showed damage to the lungs, so this was already known.
