You should read this lovely book. Seamlessly slipping across genre boundaries, it is a memoir about family life, disguised as a travel book, that reads like a novel. It is about all the big things in life - family, identity, love and death. But the travel book structure enables it to escape from the usual formulas. It doesn't need the 'big plot', the inevitable 'twist'. It just unfolds effortlessly, and its very refreshing.
One huge benefit of Kindle is the opportunity to try new authors at affordable prices, when one might not feel inclined to risk £15 plus on an unknown. In the past few months I have 'found' Gordon Ferris and Simon Gould. Now I have 'found' Conrad Jones, like Simon a former McDonalds executive.
What is it about the McD training programme that equips their senior execs to write such superb thrillers?
Soft Target is an excellent 'terrorist' thriller, set in many places but specifically in and around Liverpool, my own home area. The plot is topical and totally plausible, with many surprising twists along the way to keep the reader hitting the 'Next Page' button well into the night.
The characters are so real and involve the reader in the problems they face and the decisions they have to make.
After reading this book, I can truly place Conrad Jones alongside Andy Macnab and Chris Ryan - as did best-selling author Stephen Leather - and I would urge anyone who loves the genre to read this book. I have a suspicion that you won't be able to buy Conrad Jones' books at these low prices for much longer. I've already taken the precaution of downloading Soft Target 2 and 3 which continue the story, featuring 'Tank' Tankersley and his unit.
