Classic literature on your kindle.
The Kindle has opened up the world of classic literature. Many literary classics are available for free download so people are trying them out for themselves, simply on the basis of whether they are a enjoyable read or not.
Jane Austen is a great example of this. Most of us have seen the films and now the books are free on kindle, are enjoying reading the original versions.
It is the same for Cranford - a BBC TV series based on the Elizabeth Gaskell novels.
Less well known are the works of Antony Trollope. Not studied at school and with no current film or TV adaptations, his work is easy to miss.
However if you like pacy and well written stores that bring in elements of family drama as well as contemporary issues of the day there are plenty to choose from.
Anthony Trollope was a very popular and prolific writer of the Victorian era and most of his work is now free. His most well known series is probably the Barchester Chronicles, which begins with shorter story the Warden and culminates in the last chronicle of Barset.
They deal with the world of the clergy and gentry in the fictional county of Barset and all the dealings, romance and social manoeuvring that goes on between them.
He also wrote the Pallisers - a series set in the world of parliamentary intrigue.
Antony Trollope has been overlooked in favour of his contemporary Charles Dickens whose work also widely available free from Amazon and Gutenberg.
The Forsythe Saga by John Galsworthy can be obtained free from Amazon or Gutenberg. This family drama focuses on an extended upper middle class family in Late Victorian and Edwardian England and will delight readers who enjoy period drama such as Downton Abbey.
Willkie Collins is another writer who has experienced a resurgence. The Moonstone has been credited as being the first ever detective novel and is a pacy sometimes humorous and always enjoyable read.
Today some of his less well known novels seem inaccessible to modern readers but The Woman in White is another Willkie Collins book that is well worth reading.
Vanity Fair by WM Thackeray was first published in 1847 and has been immortalised in film. The plot is based around the intertwining lives of two schoolgirls and their acquaintances, lives and loves and it features some great comic points and fantastic characters across the backdrop of world events.
Vanity Fair is extremely easy to read for the modern audience too and many people have rated it as their favourite book of all time.
Scott Fitzgerald an American writer is regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. His most famous novel is the haunting Great Gatsby (0.49p) but other works such as Tender Is the night (0.77p) and some of his less well-known titles are well worth a read.
I hope this article gives you a starter into the world of the classics you probably wont like them all but you may find a new author you like whose work will be largely free for you to read.
