The Card, a Story of Adventure in the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett
FREE: The Card, a Story of Adventure in the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett

The book tells the story of Denry Machin who, from humble beginnings, rises to fame and fortune in "The Five Towns" of Staffordshire due to his unerring abilty to spot the main chance and his willingness to take a few risks. Although written a hundred years ago the some of the situations descibed in the book, such as the decline in the building trade, newspaper wars and the price of professional footballers, are surprisingly contemporary. He published his first essentially autobiographical novel The Man from the North in 1898. His best work is contained in his novels of the 'Five Towns' which include Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908), Clayhanger (1910), The Card (1911), Hilda Lessways (1911) and These Twain (1916). During the First World War, he became Director of Propaganda at the War Ministry. He refused a knighthood in 1918. In 1926, he began writing an influential weekly article on books for the Evening Standard newspaper.

Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde FREE: Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde

Written while wrongfully detained in Reading Gaol this wonderful poem shows the gentle genius of Oscar Wilde as he waxes at his most lyrical in the most challenging circumstances. If there was ever proof of silver lining to clouds then this poem provides us with that. Oscar Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams and plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment which was followed by his early death.

FREE: Old Cookery Books and Ancient Cuisine by William Carew Hazlitt

Did you know that just a few centuries ago peacocks, swans and other birds with wonderful plumage had their skin with the feathers taken off and put aside while the bird was roasting, and that the cooked meat would then be re-dressed in its skin and feathers prior to being brought to the table? Did you know that sauces used to be made with more eggs than we, today, consume in a week or even month? The only question that is left unanswered is how our forefathers managed to survive on such extraordinarily rich diets and didn't die of heart failure during dinner!

The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe
FREE: The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe

The Masque of the Red Death was first published in 1842, and is rightly considered one of the greatest works of Gothic horror ever penned. When the story begins, a strange and deadly plague is stalking the land. When the disease is contracted, the victim is dead within a half hour, bleeding from every pore, giving the ghastly disease its name, the "Red Death." The strange and demented Prince Prospero decides to defeat the disease by sequestering himself and a thousand courtiers in a sealed-off abbey, where they can lead a life of comfort, safety and sensuality. But, when the Prince throws a masquerade ball, there appears among the guests a figure dressed as one who died of the Red Death. Why is he dressed like that, and who is it beneath the costume?
